​​How does myUHN Patient Portal keep my personal health information safe?

At UHN, we take protecting your information and privacy very seriously. Keeping your online information safe starts the moment you sign up for a myUHN account. We use many layers of security, including:

  • data encryption technology (similar to banking websites)
  • strong password and security question rules
  • regular checks of the system to protect against illegal access

myUHN was also reviewed by experts to make sure the security features passed all tests for safety and privacy.

It's also important for you to do all you can to keep your personal health record safe online so others don't see your information without your permission.

How to keep your information safe

1. Keep your personal information private

Don't give out personal information on the phone, by email or online unless you know who the person is and why they need to know the information.

2. Keep your password private

  • Never save your password on a public computer, such as a computer at an Internet cafe or public library.
  • Change your password after using a public computer.
  • Don't share your password with others.

3. Protect your information in public

  • Make sure no one is looking over your shoulder. Do this when you use any device (including your phone or tablet) in a public place.
  • Avoid using public computers to access private information. If you do need to use one, then:
    • Always 'Sign out' of your account before closing the website. Do this even if you have to step away from the computer for a minute.
    • Delete your browser history before you leave the computer. This erases any records or websites you visited. It also erases your passwords or other information you entered.
    • Keep your password private by changing it after using a public computer.
