What We Do

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) refers to methods that either supplement or replace an individual’s speech and/or writing. The AAC Clinic provides individuals with techniques or devices that can be used to enhance participation in important life activities.

The clinic provides:

  • Recommendations based on clients’ communication needs/goals and abilities
  • Device trials and prescription
  • Customization and set-up
  • Training for clients and caregivers

  • Virtual and in-person services.

The Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Clinic is comprised of Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs), Occupational Therapists (OTs), Communicative Disorders Assistants (CDAs), a Biomedical Technologist, and a Unit Clerk.

Our interdisciplinary team may recommend a combination of AAC methods to help someone communicate effectively. AAC methods may include:

  • Unaided approaches such as the use of facial expressions, eye-gaze, and gestures
