What We Do

We provide on-call addiction medicine support for patients in Toronto Western Hospital's Emergency Department or inpatient units who:

  • Are at the hospital for a medical or mental health reason
  • Have a known or suspected substance use disorder (SUD)
  • Are interested in further assessment or treatment for that SUD

We offer evidence-based, patient-centred care. Our team provides a range of services including:

  • Assessment and counselling
  • Medication recommendations (for managing withdrawal, cravings, replacement therapy)
  • Refer patients to other treatment services upon discharge

We also support and educate other care teams who have questions or need guidance on care approaches with patients who use substances.

Additional UHN substance use services are available through the RAAM Clinic and Addiction Outpatient Services.

Dr. Hasan Sheikh

Dr. Hasan Sheikh, MD, CCFP-EM
Dr. Hasan Sheikh is an emergency and addictions physician at UHN and an assistant professor at the University of Toronto Department of Family and Community Medicine. He helped create the Rapid Access Addiction Medicine (RAAM) clinic in 2018, which provides low-barrier care for people who use substances. Dr. Sheikh has led several initiatives to improve the care of people who use drugs in the emergency department, including the initiation of opiate agonist therapy, the distribution of take-home naloxone kits, and the initiation of anti-craving medications for people with alcohol use disorder. His research has likewise focused on improving the care of people who use substances and has included studies on the high mortality rate of people who repeatedly visit the ED for alcohol-related reasons, the barriers to prescribing opiate agonist therapy in the emergency department, and the outcomes of patients attending the RAAM clinic. Dr. Sheikh is also an educator who has presented on substance use disorders locally, nationally, and internationally.
