About IPE

What is Interprofessional Education (IPE)?

“Interprofessional education occurs when two or more professions learn about, from and with each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes.

*Professional is an all-encompassing term that includes individuals with the knowledge and/or skills to contribute to the physical, mental and social well-being of a community.” (WHO, 2010).

What is Interprofessional Care/Collaboration (IPC)?

Collaborative practice in health care occurs when multiple health workers from different professional backgrounds provide comprehensive services by working with patients, their families, carers and communities to deliver the highest quality of care across settings.

*Practice includes both clinical and non-clinical health-related work, such as diagnosis, treatment, surveillance, health communications, management and sanitation engineering.” (WHO, 2010).

Where do Interprofessional Education and Care Live at UHN?

Interprofessional Education and Interprofessional Care are interdependent and synergistic - where you find one, you will find the other at UHN.

At UHN you cannot help but be involved in interprofessional education. Whether taking part in a structured student IPE clinical experience, or engaging in other IPE activities such as attending team rounds and family meetings, shadowing a team member from another profession, or reviewing a patient chart to name but a few.

Staff opportunities for interprofessional education at UHN are also critical. IPE activities are open to all team members as part of the culture of lifelong learning fostered at UHN. Interprofessional care and collaborative practice have many champions at both the professional and program levels across UHN. These champions host interprofessional care and education rounds and workshops, train and develop IPC/E facilitators, and model interprofessional patient-centred care.
