Referrals

Only physicians may send a referral. Please direct your referral to Dr. Baltzer or Dr. Zuo. Note that Dr. Baltzer and Dr. Zuo see patients together in a monthly combined clinic for facial paralysis and facial nerve dysfunction in conjunction with Dr. Ronald Zuker.

Please include:

  • A referral letter
  • Clinical notes including relevant operative reports
  • Lab and X-ray findings

Our office will call the referring physician with information about the patient's first appointment. The referring physician's office is responsible for providing the patient with the appointment information, including time and location, important documents, test results and imaging they must bring.

Please note that clinic appointments may be virtual visits. The clinic team will let you know what type of appointment is appropriate for your care. Learn more about virtual visits at UHN »

What We Do

The UHN Facial Paralysis and Facial Nerve Dysfunction Clinic is a multidisciplinary clinic for comprehensive evaluation and treatment of disorders affecting the facial nerve. Causes of facial nerve dysfunction include congenital, traumatic, cancer-related, or inflammatory or infectious conditions (Bell’s, Ramsay-Hunt, etc). We treat adult patients 18 years of age and older with acute or chronic facial nerve dysfunction.

Our multidisciplinary clinic provides both medical and surgical strategies to improve facial nerve function, ranging from facial physiotherapy to neuromodulator injections to surgical techniques. Surgical techniques include those to improve eye closure, smile symmetry (facial reanimation), or facial tightness and synkinesis (selective neurectomy). Note that not all patients with facial paralysis or facial nerve dysfunction are candidates for surgery.
