What We Do

We are a subspecialized area of psychiatric practice that involves psychiatric care of complex, physically ill patients under the care of medical and surgical services. Our care is provided to 3 major groups:

  • Patients with psychiatric disorders complicating their medical care
  • Patients who develop psychiatric disorders during the treatment of their medical or surgical condition
  • Patients with somatic symptom and related disorders – which may be characterized by an extreme focus on physical symptoms (such as pain or fatigue) that cause major emotional and physical distress, making it difficult to function and sometimes disabling

This integrated service operates at the interface between physical and mental health facilitating comprehensive treatment approaches in areas such as oncology, transplant, cardiac and bariatric surgery and neurology, among others.

We support teams across UHN on a consultation basis and educate staff on mental health literacy. The program is divided into four teams each at the Toronto General, Toronto Western, Princess Margaret and Toronto Rehab sites. Team members include physicians, clinicians, nurse practitioners along with medical trainees. In keeping with the mandate of an academic health sciences centre, we also provide clinical and research opportunities to medical and other health professional trainees.

Our inpatient services are complemented by the Mental Health in Medicine Clinic, which provides outpatient support to UHN patients who need mental health care because of a serious or complex medical condition. The Mental Health in Medicine Clinic only treats patients who are currently being seen by a UHN program or clinic.
