What We Do

What is eConsult?

The Ontario eConsult Service is a secure, web-based tool that allows physicians and nurse practitioners timely access to specialist advice for patients, often eliminating the need for an in-person specialist visit. It is part of the Ontario eServices Program and supports consultations with psychiatrists in UHN's Outpatient Mental Health Clinic on mental health issues.

How eConsult Works

Physicians and nurse practitioners submit patient-specific clinical questions related to adult mental health (e.g. depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, bipolar disorder) in patients aged 18 to 64. UHN specialists typically respond within seven days, helping to manage patient care virtually.

What to Include in an eConsult

To facilitate a thorough and timely consultation, please provide:

  • A clear question
  • Past medical history
  • Medications
    • Be as specific as possible, including specifying brand name drug vs specific generic
    • Include over-the-counter medications used regularly, if possible
  • Sufficient and appropriate clinical details such as relevant investigations and treatments
  • Allergies and reaction history, if relevant
