Referrals

Referrals often come through the UHN Emergency Departments. Family physicians and other specialists may also refer patients in crisis who do not have current psychiatric follow-ups.

All referrals are considered urgent.

Referrals for this clinic are processed by UHN's Centre for Mental Health Central Intake Referral system. Submit the completed form via fax (416 603 5215). The form will be reviewed to ensure that it is complete; if incomplete, the form will be returned to you.

After you have referred your patient, our admin team will contact the patient directly with the appointment information. Information about the appointment will also be sent to your office as per the CPSO guidelines.

Who is eligible?

Patients currently experiencing a mental health crises that require prompt care, but do not need to visit the emergency department. Typically, individuals under the care of a psychiatrist or a facility offering psychiatric services are ineligible for this program. However, in urgent cases where a patient in this situation requires counselling, a crisis clinician can offer bridging support.

Contact our central referral intake office if you are unsure as to whether or not a referral is appropriate.

Please note that clinic appointments may be virtual visits. The clinic team will let you know what type of appointment is appropriate for your care. Learn more about virtual visits at UHN »

What We Do

The Urgent Care Clinic is staffed by mental health clinicians and psychiatrists who specialize in crisis management. Patients suitable for referral to the clinic are those who are not in need of immediate hospitalization or emergency department assessment, but are unable to wait weeks for an outpatient psychiatric assessment. Using a biopsychosocial approach, our team makes an assessment and offers recommendations – these may include referral to a community resource for ongoing care or short-term follow-up within the clinic. We also provide a "bridging" function for people whose long-term follow-up is either interrupted or has not yet been arranged.

Patients receiving treatment within the clinic will be placed into one of two streams, either consulting with a crisis clinician for a brief, intensive therapy of a maximum of 3 appointments or with a psychiatrist for a maximum of 10 appointments. Treatment is intended to bring patients to a position of stability and not be ongoing.

How to Prepare

Your first appointment can take 2 hours or more. Any subsequent appointments that may be booked following your initial assessment will be approximately 1 hour.
