The Clinical Biochemistry division provides high-volume routine diagnostic and specialized esoteric testing to health care providers at UHN and serves as a reference laboratory provincially and nationally.
We perform approximately 10 million tests per year and use technologies and outreach efforts to build capacity, provide training and offer support to other institutions. In addition, we provide testing to research contracting agencies and principal investigators worldwide.
Clinical biochemistry tests are performed at the UHN core laboratories (located at TGH, TWH and PMH), which are equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation capable of performing thousands of tests per hour.
Clinical biochemistry staff are involved in leading-edge research in the areas of tumour markers, cardiac markers, endocrinology, transplantation, immunology and point-of-care testing. New laboratory-developed tests and platforms are routinely introduced to further both research and clinical trials. The Division supports and encourages training and continuing education.
