FLS was developed by the
Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and is endorsed by the American College of Surgeons. The FLS has three training components: Didactic, technical, and assessment. The didactic component of FLS consists of multiple online modules that describe laparoscopic intra-operative scenarios. The technical component has been extensively validated and consists of 5 tasks performed on a bench-top trainer. The assessment component includes a 80 multiple-choice online cognitive exam followed by evaluation of participant's ability to perform the 5 technical skills tasks.
UHN is one of two official proctors in Canada who can administer the FLS examination.
