Jennifer Cayetano
Jennifer Cayetano is an Administrative Assistant in the Osteoporosis Program at the Schroeder Arthritis Institute. She has been with the Osteoporosis Program for over 14 years and has enjoyed her journey. She started in the clinic and then moved to Dr. Angela Cheung's administrative team, Head of the Osteoporosis Program, taking care of her clinical schedule, patients and billings. Her role has since evolved to become the administrative lead in the Osteoporosis clinic, where she oversees other administrative professionals and ensures that the clinics are always running smoothly. She works alongside the doctors in the Osteoporosis Program, helping them organize their day and helping them with logistical items. Her desire to always look for improvement led her to create a database that helps track patient referrals, before the introduction of EPIC System, and implement a 'last-minute cancellation list' which have both resulted in improving their clinical wait time.
Throughout her many years at the Institute, Jennifer has organized numerous events for the program. One of the major annual events that she organized was the Canadian Bone Strength Working Group, in which Dr. Angela Cheung met with experts in the field of osteoporosis across Canada to discuss the latest advancements in the field. Another event that she organized was the Annual Outreach Educational Evening, an event to highlight current trends in managing osteoporosis to community physicians and other health professionals.
Jennifer's unwavering dedication to patient care is her biggest motivation. "If something is not working, we modify it until we improve the outcome." When asked about her Mantra of Success, she shared, "I find that whatever I do, big or small, I give it my best. By doing that, I think you should be happy because you tried your best, and that truly counts." Jennifer's approachability and friendliness are invaluable in her role at the Institute, and her co-workers often mention her happy disposition and smiling face.
A fun fact about Jennifer is that she loves eating and trying different kinds of food. She took baking courses before the pandemic to the delight of her co-workers, who could enjoy her creations.
Jennifer is very thankful to work alongside her team within the Osteoporosis Program at the Institute. "We have a wonderful team who work well together to give our patients a worry-free clinic experience."
On behalf of the Schroeder Arthritis Institute, we are thankful for Jennifer's exceptional contributions to the growth and success of the Institute.
Rosa Dipietroantonio
Rosa Dipietroantonio is a Work Clerk within the Hand Program at the Schroeder Arthritis Institute. She joined the University Health Network organization 36 years ago working in various departments including information desk, admitting health and medical records as well as in cardiology. She has now been with the Hand Program at the Institute for 3 years. Rosa plays an integral role in patient care. Every day, she ensures that all patients are positively welcomed to the Hand Clinic. Some of Rosa's key responsibilities are welcoming patients and checking them in upon their arrival to the clinic. She ensures that all of their information and their demographics are up to date in their patient file and makes sure that all their questions are answered. Once this is complete, she provides them with a wrist band and ensures that they are ready to see the doctor once their appointment time comes. "I always look at it as if the patients were my parents. I would want them to be treated with the utmost care and respect and that is what I do my best to provide to all patients each day."
In addition to patient care, Rosa enjoys working alongside her team including work clerks and doctors. She emphasized how important it is to help your coworkers and truly work as a team. She noted that when you work together, you can solve any challenge that comes your way and find solutions together.
Rosa's motivation stems from being determined to make a difference in patient care, believing and expecting the possibility of positive change and all of these lead to success in her workplace and in her position with patient care. When asked what her Mantra of Success is, she said, "Make sure patients are always taken care of because patients really do come first."
Rosa is a very friendly person. Her friends and coworkers say that she always comes in with a welcoming smile that helps lighten their day. "I always do my best to continue smiling and to welcome our patients in the kindest way possible. I want them to feel comfortable and cared for."
A fun fact about Rosa is that she loves to listen to music and dance. She especially loves dancing with her grandchildren and creating fun memories together.
Rosa feels very grateful to have the chance to work with an incredible team. "The team is great, and my manager Lisa Giraldi is the best, she's very awesome. The way we all get along and understand each other makes me look forward to coming to work and seeming my team. This makes the biggest difference because working in a positive environment is essential."
On behalf of the Schroeder Arthritis Institute, we are grateful for Rosa's outstanding contributions to the growth and success of the Institute.

TRAINEE/FELLOW SPOTLIGHT
Fadi Kharouf
Fadi Kharouf is a Clinical Research Fellow completing a dual fellowship, in the Psoriatic Arthritis Program, supervised by Dr. Dafna Gladman and Dr. Vinod Chandran, and in the Lupus Program within the Division of Rheumatology at the Schroeder Arthritis Institute, supervised by Dr. Zahi Touma and Dr. Dafna Gladman. Fadi was working at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem, Israel, right before he joined the Institute to pursue his dual fellowship in early 2023.
Fadi's fellowship combines both clinical and research work. Some of Fadi's roles at the Institute are seeing patients in the clinic with his supervisors, reviewing their case to help find the best solutions and treatments, and answer any questions they may have. He also partakes in research in both the field of psoriatic arthritis and in the field of lupus. "The Schroeder Arthritis Institute is internationally recognized as a center for both clinical and research work, and this is why I came here. The Institute offers a great platform to conduct research while using their massive clinical patient database, the expertise of the researchers and clinicians, as well as the help of the incredible staff. The resources at the Institute help in designing excellent studies. This collaboration in both fields has been very enriching and a privilege." Fadi was also recently awarded the Best Abstract on Spondylarthritis Research Award from the Canadian Rheumatology Association at the Canadian Rheumatology Association Annual Scientific Meeting for his abstract titled, "Degenerative Disc Disease in Young Adults with Psoriatic Arthritis."
Looking towards the future, Fadi hopes to take all the knowledge and experiences he gained at the Institute and help establish similar models of specialized care and research in his Rheumatology unit at the Hadassah Medical Center. He hopes to build a database and start enrolling patients in studies for psoriatic arthritis and lupus. "The clinical and research exposure at this Institute can teach people from different places a variety of ways to advance their own research, and that is a goal among most medical professionals. The combination is very important and makes work more interesting and helps answer questions we don't yet have the answers to." Fadi wants to encourage trainees to pursue further steps in their careers and he highlighted that "coming to the Schroeder Arthritis Institute is an excellent choice for people looking for big things."
A fun fact about Fadi is that he loves learning all about planes and different aviation aircraft, even though he is not the biggest fan of getting on a plane himself. Fadi also has a great passion for soccer and finds that this sport is an excellent conversation starter with people worldwide.
Fadi mentioned that he is very grateful to have the opportunity to grow professionally at the Schroeder Arthritis Institute. "From the moment I arrived in Toronto I was really happy. This was the start of a new experience in my life and the atmosphere of the Institute, and all of the staff, is very welcoming, and my supervisors are always there to help."
Fadi is also very grateful that his family who came with him to Toronto has also been enjoying their time. "Family is the most important thing, and we are definitely enjoying our time together here."

Mayilee Canizares
Mayilee Canizares is a Scientific Associate within the Division of Orthopedics at the Schroeder Arthritis Institute. She has worked in the field of arthritis since 2003, and in 2017, she completed her PhD on epidemiological analysis comparing health status and healthcare utilization across generations in the Canadian population, at the University of Toronto, right before joining the Schroeder Arthritis Institute. Mayilee works with Dr. Raja Rampersaud, Director of the Osteoarthritis Research Program at the Institute, and collaborates with many of the Investigators and Scientists at the Institute, looking at the epidemiology and issues related to access of care for people living with Osteoarthritis in order to provide better care and improve patient outcomes.
She is involved with numerous projects across the Division of Orthopedics. One of her main research focuses involves working with routinely collected data on healthcare utilization for musculoskeletal conditions in general and Osteoarthritis in particular. Another main role she has is working with clinical data from the LEAP OA cohort and the CSORN study, where she is looking at predictors of outcomes after surgery, patient expectations and patient satisfaction. She is currently involved in a new project in which two areas of study are being combined. The LEAP OA study will be linked in system level healthcare use in hopes of better understanding the recovery process of patients with Osteoarthritis who are undergoing surgery. Another relatively new project that Mayilee is partaking in is related to recent research she was a part of. One of her recently
published research papers helped the researchers at the Institute understand that patient expectations and fulfilling those exceptions is a major predictor of patient outcome and satisfaction after surgery. Mayilee and the team are hopeful that this new project will help them align patient expectation with the expert opinions of surgeons in hopes to overall increase patient satisfaction.
Looking towards the future, Mayilee is very hopeful that linking clinical and research together will provide better overall patient results and satisfaction. Her goal is to get a better understanding on how making recommendations and providing guidance can help in improving access and outcomes of surgical and non-surgical treatment options for people with Osteoarthritis.
Mayilee's motivation stems from her curiosity. "I love learning new things and seeing different perspectives. I don't shy away. If I see a published paper related to my research field, I want to dive into it more and learn what it's about." She mentioned the importance of thinking outside of the box. "Step back and look at the bigger picture. This will help you see what is out there and can be very helpful."
A fun fact about Mayilee is that she loves reading fiction books ever since she was young. She has recently been interested in reading historical fiction series.
Mayilee emphasized that she is very grateful to have been working alongside her brilliant team at the Institute. "I really enjoy collaborating with so many different projects. It is a privilege to work in this environment because there is so much research happening at once at the Schroeder Arthritis Institute and there are endless opportunities."
You can connect with Mayilee and follow her research updates on
LinkedIn and
ResearchGate.
On behalf of the Schroeder Arthritis Institute, we are grateful that Mayilee is a part of our team and wish her all the success in her future.
