Led by
Dr. Thomas Waddell and offered in partnership with the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program at
West Park Healthcare Centre, this program provides a comprehensive assessment – based on CT and other scans – to help patients with severe emphysema identify if they might benefit from surgery.
Emphysema is a chronic lung disease that causes patients to develop shortness of breath, wheeziness and difficulty exercising.
For most patients, the treatment is with medications such as puffer medication and, occasionally, pills or supplemental oxygen. For a small minority of patients, surgery may be an option.
