Meet Dr. Majd Al Mardini, Maxillofacial Prosthodontist
Dr. Majd Al Mardini is a Maxillofacial Prosthodontist – a dentist who specializes in the prosthetic replacement of teeth, as well as adjacent areas of the head and neck. When asked about his role in cancer treatment he says, “as a Maxillofacial Prosthodontist, I am part of a multidisciplinary team rehabilitating head and neck cancer patients”.
Prosthodontics plays an important role in the management of patients after head and neck surgery. Dr. Al Mardini recognizes the challenge to bring patients back to as close to normal function as possible following cancer surgery, and he strives to do so. He states that, “sometimes we can get the patient to function as they did before the surgery, but other times we cannot due to the extent of the tumour”. Dr. Al Mardini remembers his mentors describing these cases as “achieving a different level of success” for the person getting care. This is because the first priority is getting rid of the cancer.
Dr. Al Mardini is proud to be the Director of the Maxillofacial Prosthetics Unit in the Dental Department. He is also the lead for the Oral and Maxillofacial Rehabilitation Program at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, a program designed to help patients attain dental function after challenging surgeries for oral cancer. The program gives patients access to dental implants to support removable prostheses, where other conventional prosthetics would not be a good fit.
Dr. Al Mardini is involved in several research projects looking at the use of technology in the treatment of head and neck cancer. He hopes that one day in the near future the use of Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology will be an accessible and affordable option for every head and neck cancer patient that needs functional rehabilitation.
