In 1993, Peter and Melanie Munk gave their first gift to establish the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre at the Toronto General Hospital, which officially opened May 14th, 1997. This was the beginning of a new era for cardiac care in Canada.
Not only did their generosity create a world-renowned centre, they also established UHN’s first endowed chair for the cardiac program: the Melanie Munk Chair in Cardiovascular Surgery.
In 2006, Peter and Melanie Munk gave an additional $37 million, which, at that time, was the largest single gift to a hospital in Canadian history.
To date, the Munk’s philanthropy has contributed $67 million to the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre
and over $75 million to UHN. Peter and Melanie Munk have profoundly affected cardiac care in Canada and around the world. They have also illustrated how individuals, foundations, the private sector and government can work together to support excellence in health care and research.
Thanks to the ongoing and transformational generosity of Peter and Melanie Munk, University Health Network is home to North America’s premier cardiac centre.
