Rosa Tavares

Rosa Tavares

Rosa Tavares is a Medical Secretary within the Division of Rheumatology at the Schroeder Arthritis Institute, supporting Dr. Lori Albert and Dr. Sindhu Johnson. Rosa first joined Toronto Western Hospital in 1986 as a Ward Clerk in the ambulatory care clinic and later moved to the neurosurgery department and the sleep clinic. She joined the Division of Rheumatology in 2006 and has been in her role as a Medical Secretary since then. Some of Rosa's responsibilities include maintaining and processing patient referrals, scheduling patient appointments, updating patient profiles and records, and prioritizing patient related inquiries and concerns. Rosa is also responsible for doing billing and invoicing in the office.

Rosa's motivation stems from being in a role that directly impacts patients and having the opportunity to show the utmost patient care in the office. "My goal is to ensure that patients are always prioritized, that all their requests are handled in a timely fashion and that they are always taken care of right away. I always ensure to go out of my way to acknowledge their care and their needs." Rosa has received the Honour Your Hero with 18 patients throughout her role in the organization. Honour Your Hero is a University Health Network Foundation program that gives patients the opportunity to show their gratitude support through the form of a donation under the name of a care giver. It's truly wonderful to recognize that Rosa's patient care has positively impacted the patients in our clinic.

When asked what her Mantra of Success is, Rosa expressed "Always be ready to listen to patients to provide them with the best care possible. Making sure patients feel heard is very important." She is a very empathetic person and always maintains honesty and provides care to the best of her ability. "As an immigrant from Portugal, I have worked with many patients from all walks of life, and this extenuates my level of understanding of care for patients who are entering an environment that may be new or unfamiliar to them."

Rosa's colleagues and friends describe her as a very compassionate person. Having the opportunity to move to Canada from her small town in Portugal, she is very humble and is truly very grateful for everything she has been able to accomplish through her journey so far. She is also described as someone who is very dedicated to her family, her friends and her work. "I love coming to work. I always put my best in all that I do. When I am faced with a challenging situation, I think outside of the box and find solutions and look for the best ways to handle a problem."

A fun fact about Rosa is that she is very outgoing and loves spending time with her family especially at family gatherings. She also enjoys taking time to wind down and relax by doing yoga. On the other hand, she equally loves spending time with others and enjoys traveling to different countries, especially sunny destinations.

Rosa expressed how grateful she feels to work with an incredible team at the Schroeder Arthritis Institute. "I genuinely enjoy spending time both in and out of work with my colleagues. I am blessed to work with outstanding physicians and the great team we have at the Institute. I know that I can always count on their support as they can always count on mine."

On behalf of the Schroeder Arthritis Institute, we are thankful for Rosa's exceptional contributions to the growth and success of the Institute.

Marsha Alvares

Marsha Alvares

Marsha Alvares is a Project Director within the Division of Orthopedics at the Schroeder Arthritis Institute. Sitting down with Marsha, one can quickly identify her genuine passion for patient care and her commitment to fostering a positive team environment within the Schroeder Arthritis Institute. Marsha began her journey at the University Health Network in 2010, joining Altum Health as a Registered Physiotherapist in the Outpatient Physiotherapy Department. Her dedication and work ethic quickly led her to the role of Clinical Practice Leader, across the breadth of their WSIB specialty programs.

A drive to further enhance patient care at a model of care level led her to complete the Advanced Clinician Practitioner in Arthritis Care (ACPAC) program in 2015. Armed with advanced training and a renewed passion for a more holistic approach to orthopaedic assessment, she joined the Division of Orthopaedics in 2018 as an Advanced Physiotherapist Practitioner to develop and implement the Hip and Knee Rapid Access Clinic. By 2019, she stepped into a managerial role to oversee the roll out of Bundled Care expand rapid access clinics within the Division.

In this multifaceted role, she oversees strategic projects that drive innovation, quality care delivery and operational efficiency. Her responsibilities are diverse, ranging from managing the outpatient orthopaedics team, to driving organizational initiatives such as the EPIC implementation and most recently the launch of Ocean eReferral. As co-lead of the SAI's Health Equity strategy, Marsha is deeply committed to equitable healthcare delivery and enhancing staff education on inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility, and anti-racism. She is particularly focused on reaching marginalized communities to ensure they receive comprehensive care. This commitment not only reflects her professional goals but also her personal values, as she strives to bridge gaps in healthcare access and understanding. "I truly love my role", she shares. "Every day is different, and the diversity in my role affords me the opportunity to be involved in multiple aspects of the Division, working collaboratively with my colleagues to improve access to care and ensure a positive patient experience."

Her commitment to enhancing the healthcare experience for patients is evident in her belief that quality care begins with a dedicated and joyful team. "When a team is happy and engaged, they naturally go above and beyond for their patients," she explains. This philosophy, along with the mentorship of leaders like Silvi Groe and Dr. Christian Veillette, have influenced Marsha's leadership style and fueled her desire to make a positive impact. When asked about her mantra for success, Marsha says, "Lead with kindness. Embracing collaboration and leveraging the strengths of those around you can transform challenges into opportunities." She believes that a positive mindset can help teams navigate obstacles and foster growth.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Marsha has always had a passion for the performing arts. With a background in dance, she competed and performed professionally for years, and was a member of the inaugural Toronto Blue Jays dance team, the Fanatiks, back in 1999! Today, she still enjoys a dance party but mostly dances to embarrass her children!

Feeling fortunate to be part of the Schroeder Arthritis Institute, Marsha says, "We have an incredible leadership team and a highly motivated staff. Their strong vision aligns with my own values, and being part of an organization that continually strives to make a meaningful impact on patient care inspires me every day."
