How to Become a Registered Dietitian
Successful completion of a 4-year undergraduate degree specializing in Food and Nutrition from an accredited university (or equivalent)
- Successful completion of an accredited Dietetic Internship Program, Practicum Training Program, or Graduate Degree
- Successful completion of the Canadian Dietetic Registration Exam (CDRE)
- Registration with a provincial dietetic regulatory body, such as the
College of Dietitians of Ontario. Registered Dietitians (RDs) may require additional certification in specialized areas of practice.
How to become a Clinical Diet Technician
While there are no standard requirements for academic training and qualifications for Clinical Diet Technicians in Canada, many hospitals and other organizations prefer specialized training or certification.
This can include (but is not limited to):
- Successful completion of a 4-year undergraduate degree specializing in Food and Nutrition from an accredited university, OR
- Successful completion of a diploma in food services management or dietetic technician program
- Membership in the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management (CSNM)
Student Education
The department of Clinical Nutrition, in collaboration with the Department of Nutrition Services and in partnership with the University of Toronto Dalla Lana School of Public Health, and Toronto Public Health provides an outstanding educational program that enables nutrition students to develop expertise in nutrition practice from a wide range of perspectives within the health system, from disease prevention to palliation.
Students enrolled in the Masters of Public Health (MPH) in Nutrition and Dietetics build professional and leadership skills while learning to integrate practice across community and clinical settings. RDs at UHN are preceptors for the MPH students, facilitating the development of the skills required to provide evidence-based, patient-centred nutrition care in challenging health care environments. Placements at UHN allow students to meet the Integrated Competencies for Dietetic Education and Practice (ICDEP) as outlined by the Partnership for Dietetic Education and Practice (PDEP).
