Dr. Laurie Ailles is an award-winning senior scientist at the Princess Margaret Cancer Center whose pioneering research revealed the origins of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Her discovery is now paving the way towards more accurate and individualized prognoses that better inform potential treatments and improve outcomes for patients with the disease. Dr. Ailles' also speaks to her career path as a successful medical science researcher, which traces back to her peripatetic childhood journey of living in several countries around the world as the daughter of a Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) employee. She credits those experiences for shaping her outlook and contributing to her resilience as a researcher.
About Dr. Laurie Ailles
Dr. Ailles obtained a BSc in Biology from Carleton University and MSc in Pathology from Queen's University. She obtained her PhD in Genetics from the University of British Columbia and pursued post-doctoral fellowships at the Institute for Cancer Research in Turin, Italy, and at Stanford University. The focus of Dr. Ailles lab includes three major research areas: identification of prognostic biomarkers and novel targets for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients, epigenetics in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC), an targeting cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) in solid tumours.
