March is Nutrition Month! The theme this year is 'Eating 9 to 5!' Nutrition month celebrates healthy eating and UHN News asked our UHN Dietitians for some of their favourite nutrition tips. This is what they had to say:

  • Focus on the most nutritious calories at each meal; leave extra calories behind (added sugars, processed fats!)
  • Limit liquid calories if trying to lose weight.  This includes the healthy ones such as milk or juice.  Stick to water for hydration.
  • Bring a balanced snack to eat at the end of your work day to curb hunger until your next meal (for example: 1/2 cup cottage cheese with an apple).
  • Consume fruits and vegetables in their natural form.
  • Eat your meals sitting at a table with the TV turned off.
  • Keep pre-cut fruit or veggies in the middle of your fridge for the easiest access and store your snack foods in one inconvenient cupboard.
  • Be prepared!  Pack your meals and snacks the night before so you aren't tempted to skip meals or buy fast food.
  • Eat in moderation!  It is fine to have a treat every once in a while.

1 cup frozen or fresh fruit

1 small container or ½ cup low fat yogurt

¼ - ½ cup high fibre cereal or oats

2 Tbsp roasted almonds or your favourite nuts

Layer together for a tasty yogurt parfait.
