When Dr. Gaétan Tardif first became involved in the Paralympic Games, he was hooked.
"I was captured by the incredible drive, athleticism and spirit of Paralympic athletes," Tardif said of his experience on the medical team. "The athletes continue to inspire me."
It's that enthusiasm combined with medical expertise that has led to his new role as President of the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC). In this elected position, Tardif will lead and empower Canadian athletes with disabilities to reach the podium.
"I'm really looking forward to working with the sport community to help Canada become the world's leading Paralympic nation," said Tardif, UHN's medical program director of rehabilitation and post-acute care. "The hard work starts right away."
2012 Chef de Mission
Tardif, who will be taking over for David Legg, joined the non-profit, private organization in 2000 and went on to act as Canada's Chef de Mission at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
The Quebec native also served as Director of Administration and Chair of the HR Committee on the Canadian Paralympic Committee Board of Directors from 2008 to 2013. He was also a member of the Games Committee from 2006 to 2013.
Tardif will use his fluency in both of Canada's official languages and experience treating patients at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute to strengthen the Paralympic Movement and guide Canada's athletes toward success.
