The success of the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre's Dragon's Den-style Innovation Committee is again receiving national attention with an initiative that could be adopted in hospitals across Canada in the near future.
Designed by Dr. Keyvan Karkouti and his team, the blood conservation project has already saved more than 1 million within the year of its inception, decreasing the use of blood and blood products by 20 per cent and 40 per cent respectively.

The product was initially funded by the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre Innovation Committee. After its first six months, the project began being funded by UHN. The initiative is currently part of a study by the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) to see if it can be replicated in hospitals across the country.
