Supporting Ukrainians in science

UHN is proud to launch the Stand with Ukraine Program to support displaced Ukrainian scientists and research trainees.

The invasion of Ukraine by Russian armed forces has created a humanitarian crisis that has displaced millions of Ukrainian citizens – many of whom are seking asylum and relocating to Canada. 

Funding for the program is being made possible by the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation and the UHN Foundation. The program is designed to be complementary to existing opportunities from the University of Toronto (U of T), and the Canadian government via the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

Individuals applying for positions as a postdoctoral fellow, technician, research associate or visiting scientist must have relevant biomedical research expertise. Graduate students will require enrolment in the School of Graduate Studies at the University of Toronto via a department that best matches their research interests and in which a potential faculty supervisor at UHN holds a research appointment.

Exchange graduate students will require enrolment as an International Visiting Graduate Student at the university.

Master's students

UHN funding available: > $20,000 in year 2 if another scholarship is not available

Complementary programs:

• CIHR Special Response Fund for Trainees (Ukraine) (year 1, $20,000)
• U of T's Scholars-at-Risk Fellowship ($10,000).

Doctoral students

UHN funding available: > $25,000 in year 2 if another scholarship is not available

Complementary programs:

• CIHR Special Response Fund for Trainees (Ukraine) (year 1, $25,000)
• U of T's Scholars-at-Risk Fellowship ($10,000).

Exchange graduate students

UHN funding available: (CIHR funding, see below, covers one-year exchanges)

Complementary support and programs:

• Tuition fees at U of T are waived for exchange students
• CIHR Special Response Fund for Trainees (Ukraine) (year 1, $20,000 or $25,000)
• U of T's Scholars-at-Risk Fellowship ($10,000).

Postdoctoral fellows

UHN funding available: Salary support of $45,000 in year 2 (four competitive scholarships available)

• CIHR's Special Response Fund for Trainees (Ukraine) (year 1, $45,000)

Scientists, technicians and scientific associates

UHN funding available: Stipends of up to $25,000 in year 1

Note: Complementary Canadian government funding is not available for these individuals.
