Congratulations to Dr. Long Nguyen, scientist and medical oncologist based in the Breast Site Group at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, for receiving the Marathon of Hope Cancer Centre's Network (MOHCCN) Clinician Scientist Award!
The MOHCCN Clinician Scientist Awards provide four outstanding early-career clinician scientists with funding to support high quality research in precision oncology. The award supports early-career investigators as they develop their careers as independent clinician scientists.
Dr. Nguyen has been awarded $225,000 over three years to be matched by Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Worth a total of $450,000 over three years, the award will help Dr. Nguyen create a tool that could predict how patients with triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) will respond to current treatments to help personalize treatments.
Ultimately, Dr. Nguyen's goal is to generate new knowledge that will eventually help provide TNBC patients with the right treatment at the right time for their particular cancer.
Dr. Nguyen completed his PhD in Experimental Medicine at the University of British Columbia, his residency training in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology at the University of Toronto and a clinical/research postdoctoral fellowship in functional breast cancer genomics at the University of Cambridge.
Dr. Nguyen's research focuses on studying clonal heterogeneity in breast cancer to understand how rare malignant clones contribute to disease progression and treatment resistance, and has been recognized by the European Society for Medical Oncology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
Dr. Milos Popovic, Institute Director at UHN's KITE Research Institute, has been appointed the new Director of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at University of Toronto (U of T).
As Director of Biomedical Engineering (BME), Dr. Popovic has a unique opportunity to accelerate the translation of discovery into practice. Between KITE's research and innovation, and BME's collaborators, they will develop solutions to address global challenges in human health.
BME is home to 100 faculty members and 300 graduate students who receive training in biomedical and clinical engineering across 24 academic and hospital partners.
Dr. Popovic is also a scientist who specializes in electrical simulation and neurorehabilitation and has been a tenured professor with the U of T Institute since 2006.
