What We Do

Immune effector cells may be used to treat conditions such as:

  • Lymphoma
  • Leukemia
  • Multiple myeloma
  • Solid tumor cancers

At Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, we do a type of immune effector cell therapy called CAR T-cell therapy (Chimeric antigen receptor T-cells).

Overview of the CAR T-cell process:

  1. T-cells are collected from your blood, through a process called leukapheresis.
  2. The collected T-cells are sent to a manufacturing company.
  3. The manufacturing company changes the T-cells in a lab and adds a new "hook," called a CAR, to them. T-cells with the new CAR or hook attached are called CAR T-cells.
  4. The manufacturing company then makes many copies of the CAR-T cells, freezes them and ships them back to the hospital, where you receive them as an infusion.
