What We Do

Blood and marrow transplants are also known as hematopoietic stem cell transplants. These transplants are used for patients who have blood or bone marrow disorders and other types of conditions that may benefit from this treatment. Stem cells are collected from the bone marrow or peripheral blood of a donor and are used to help treat patients when chemotherapy treatment alone is not likely to be effective.

Allogeneic blood and marrow transplant is when stem cells are collected from a living donor (not yourself) who may be a blood relative or an unrelated volunteer donor from a global registry. After being collected, the donor's stem cells are infused into you after you are given high-dose chemotherapy and (usually) radiation treatment. Most patients will have their stem cell transplant in an inpatient unit and stay in the hospital for about 4 weeks.

Allogeneic blood and marrow transplants treat conditions such as cancers of the blood and bone marrow (for example: leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, myelofibrosis and lymphoma). Allogeneic blood and marrow transplants are also used to treat conditions other than cancer (for example: aplastic anemia, bone marrow failure syndromes and sickle cell disease). Please ask your health care team for more information.

What to Expect at Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplant

A member of the Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplant team will call and provide you with a time for your first appointment with the Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplant program. You will usually be asked to have blood work done before meeting with the transplant team.

Learn more about preparing for your first appointment in the Guide to the Princess Margaret.
