Help with E-Books

New! Easy access to e-books using your cell phone!

UHN patients, families, caregivers, staff, and community members with Ontario cell phone number that can receive a text message can register for Patient E-books by creating a library card online.

If you live in Ontario but do not have a smart phone, or you live outside of Ontario, contact us to get access to our e-books:

Follow the steps below to register for UHN Patient E-Books using your cell phone number:

  1. Download and open the free Libby by OverDrive App from your app store.
  2. Follow the on-screen prompts to add our library - University Health Network to the Libby App.
  3. Enter your cell phone number to receive the verification code via text message.
  4. Complete your registration by entering your name and the campaign code. Check the current campaign code
  5. After you enter your information, you will get your online library card (Instant Digital Card)
  6. You can borrow e-books now on your cell phone, tablet and computer

Frequently Asked Questions

There are two ways to search for e-books and e-audiobooks in the Libby app:

  • Searching by keyword, author, or title
  • Browsing by collection
  1. Searching by keyword, author or title
  2. To search for e-books by keyword, author or title
    • Tap the search icon at the bottom of the screen
    • Enter your search term (e.g. a topic, author, title) in the search bar
    • Select the title from the search results
  3. Browsing by collection
  4. To browse by collection:
    • Tap the library icon at the bottom of the screen
    • Scroll down to see our collections

To borrow an e-book or e-audiobook on your mobile device follow the steps below:

  1. Click on the e-book that you want to read or listen
  2. If you see a Borrow button, that means that the book is available
  3. Click on Borrow to check it out
  4. Once you borrow an e-book, on the You have borrowed screen there are three options you can choose from:
    • Open Book or Open Audiobook - start reading the book right away. If you are connected to a Wi-Fi, the book will download to your Shelf immediately
    • Keep browsing - search for more books to borrow
    • Go to Shelf - view your current Loans and Holds
  5. If you see Place Hold button, that means that the book is not available. Click on Place Hold to place hold on the book. When the book becomes available you will get a notification from Libby. You will have three days to borrow or cancel it

To see the books that you borrowed in Libby

  • Go to your Shelf at the bottom of your screen
  • When on your Shelf, tap Loans

  • E-books will be automatically returned to the library after three weeks. When they are returned, they are also removed from your Shelf and deleted from your device
  • If you want to return the book early, you can do it by following the steps bellow:
    1. Go to your Shelf
    2. Tap Loans at the top of your screen
    3. Tap Manage Loans, then Return Early

We have e-books and e-audiobooks in French, Chinese, Spanish and Portuguese. You can find them in Libby in two different ways:

  1. In the Guides section:
    • Go to the home page
    • Click on the Guides section
    • Click on Languages
    • Scroll down to see e-books in French, Chinese, Spanish, and Portuguese
  2. Using the filter option:
    • Go to the top left corner of your screen
    • Click on the filter symbol
    • Scroll down to find the Language section
