The vascular system is responsible for carrying blood to and from all major organs in the body. It is the plumbing upon which all systems in the body rely for survival and proper functioning.
If the plumbing fails or is compromised through atherosclerosis, aneurysms, thrombosis or blood clots, to name a few, major organ systems are at risk of failing as well. In fact, vascular diseases and abnormalities are strongly implicated in several systemic disease processes, including cardiovascular disease, stroke and kidney failure.
The Division of Vascular Surgery at Toronto General Hospital is a world-class tertiary academic referral unit renowned for delivering care to highly complex cases through advanced diagnostic and surgical interventions. The division encompasses both clinical and basic science research activities, and serves a principal site for the Vascular Surgical Royal College Fellowship training program in Toronto. Currently, our division is the only Canadian site participating in the Society for Vascular Surgery Vascular Quality Initiative.
The Division of Vascular Surgery offers a broad range of treatments for vascular disease. Diseases treated include all types of aneurysms, peripheral arterial disease, venous disease, thoracic outlet syndrome, arteriovenous malformations, dialysis access and lymphedema. Treatments offered include major open surgery, however, less invasive therapies frequently can be offered. These include angioplasty for blocked arteries and endovascular aneurysm repair for infra-renal aneurysms. Our division also specializes in minimally invasive therapy for many other types of aortic aneurysms, including aortic arch, thoracic, thoraco-abdominal, iliac and popliteal aneurysms. These aneurysms can be treated with advanced endovascular solutions, such as fenestrated and branched endovascular aneurysm repair. A team approach to assessment and treatment of all aneurysms and peripheral vascular disease occurs, secondary to a strong collaboration with Interventional Radiology.
