What We Do

Hand Therapy helps patients in their recovery after they have had hand surgery. Our dedicated team is made up of hand therapists who are trained and certified in physiotherapy or occupational therapy. We work with patients on a one-on-one basis, assessing a patient, creating a plan for therapy, making custom splints and braces as needed and teaching exercises and other therapeutic techniques.

Our team is part of the multidisciplinary team in UHN's Hand Program. We work closely with the surgeon, inpatient nurse, inpatient social worker and orthopaedic technician in the Hand Program to provide timely and appropriate care for our patients so that they may achieve the best recovery outcomes.

How to Prepare

A hand therapist will complete a full assessment as the first step in your care at the clinic. The therapist will use a number of different assessment techniques, for example, testing your range of motion or your ability to grip.

Based on your assessment, the therapist will develop a plan for your treatment. These are some of the kinds of treatment that your therapist may use:

  • Custom-made splints
  • Exercises to complete during your appointments and at home
  • Temperature-based treatments, such as warm wax or hot packs
  • Hands-on therapy, such as stretching
  • Sensory treatments for patients with nerve injuries

Education is also a big part of your treatment, and your therapist will teach you about your condition and ways you can improve your recovery at home.

Impaired hand function can cause you to experience frustration and disruption of your normal roles. We offer a Hand Injury Support Group to help address your emotional and psychological needs. This group meets once a week for 4 weeks.
