This weekend we learned of events profoundly impacting one of our physicians, Dr. Mohammed Shamji, his wife, Dr. Elana Fric Shamji, and their family. I know all of us at UHN are shocked and saddened by this news and I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Elana Fric Shamji.

The Division of Neurosurgery has worked over the weekend and again this morning to put plans into place to ensure that Dr. Shamji’s patients do not experience any disruption in their care. The comprehensive efforts by the Division of Neurosurgery to coordinate seamless patient care is a remarkable demonstration of our primary value – the needs of patients come first. There is no doubt that our patients will be experiencing a mixture of emotions, including grief, confusion, pain, and anxiety.

As we navigate our way through this tragedy, we are guided by our values to support our patients and one another, including the Spine group, the Division of Neurosurgery, the Department of Surgery, and the hundreds of employees, volunteers, students, residents, and fellows who support the multiple dimensions of UHN. All staff can use UHN's Employee Assistance Program at any time for support and our Spiritual Care Team has been involved throughout.

Please know that all of us on the Executive and Senior Management Teams are here to support you as we work through this difficult time. In times like this we are bound by the extraordinary resilience of UHN and by a strong commitment to our purpose and core values.
