Contact & Information
There are two Emergency Departments at UHN, open 24/7.
In case of an emergency, call 911
What to Bring
- Your health card (OHIP card)
- A photo ID that includes your current address
- List of your allergies and any medications that you are on
- Test results, x-rays, letters or reports from other facilities that might help us take care of your medical problem
Our hospitals provide professional
translation services but if you're not fluent in English you may find it helpful to bring a friend or family member who can translate your needs to our staff.
Please do not bring any valuables to the hospital (cash, jewelry or other important items). UHN is not responsible for any personal items that are lost or stolen.
ED Wait Times
You can see the time that most patients will wait to see a doctor in the Toronto General and Toronto Western Hospital Emergency Departments today.
Important note: Wait times will vary depending on each patient's condition. Patients with severe injury or illness will be seen sooner.
Virtual Emergency Visits
The UHN Emergency Departments now offer virtual visits, for urgent but not life-threatening conditions.
Same-day appointments become available every morning at 7:00 am.

The Emergency Departments at UHN:
- Provide expert assessment and management of walk-in patients and patients who arrive by ambulance
- Arrange for follow-up care
- As a teaching hospital, provide training to students and staff in nursing, medicine and allied health disciplines
- Conduct research to improve emergency care
Exceptions to Our Services
The UHN Emergency Departments are happy to see any and all patients, but please note the following:
Childbirth: UHN can't provide special obstetrics care. If you do attend one of our Emergency Departments, we may have to transfer you to another hospital to continue your care. The nearest hospital which provides this service is
Mount Sinai Hospital.
Children: UHN does not have any pediatricians on staff. While Toronto Western Hospital does see children if a child requires admission or specialist care, they will need to be transferred to another hospital, generally the
Hospital for Sick Children.
Medical advice: We cannot offer medical advice over the phone. Telehealth Ontario is a free, confidential telephone service you can call to get health advice or general health information from a Registered Nurse.
Phone: 1 866 797 0000 |
TTY: 1 866 797 0007
Additional charges: Some services (e.g., Ambulance) and products (e.g., crutches or certain types of splints) are not covered by Ontario Health Insurance. You may be asked to pay for these services or to expect a bill in the mail. We will generally inform you about these costs and try to answer any questions you may have. If you have supplementary insurance or are not an Ontario resident, there may be further costs or possibilities for recovery of these charges. You may need to contact your health insurance provider for assistance.
