Our goal is first, last and always to find a cure for arthritis, and our mission is to develop a world-leading centre that prevents and effectively treats the disease.
Most people think of arthritis as a single disease – but it’s really a group of more than 100 different diseases. Generally speaking, arthritis is the inflammation of joints which results in chronic pain, reduced mobility, premature disability and permanent disfigurement. More than four million Canadians suffer from arthritis or related conditions, and it’s the leading cause of disability in Canada.
The Schroeder Arthritis Institute is Canada’s largest multidisciplinary arthritis program with more than 80,000 out patients a year. It has an international reputation for innovative research and exceptional patient care.
Education
The Division of Orthopedics at UHN and the University of Toronto established the first formal training program in orthopedic surgery and it has become renowned for the pioneering advances made in the specialty. Orthopedic surgeons from around the world visit Toronto to learn and to teach this specialty.
The Schroeder Arthritis Institute plays a significant role in medical student and resident training. We are one of seven affiliated academic training hospitals and provide both clinical and research training to the majority of the University of Toronto medical students and residents in orthopedics, rheumatology, hand surgery and osteoporosis medicine.

Research/Innovation
A collaboration among clinicians, surgeons and researchers in its four divisions will allow for a systematic study of the many different forms of arthritis for the first time.
Strategic partnerships have been formed with experts in the field in Canada and around the world. Partners include the McEwen Stem Cell Institute, the STAAR Facility (Spatio-Temporal Targeting and Amplification of Radiation Program) and others.
Additional scientists specializing in stem cell research are currently being recruited.
